SACRAMENTO, CA. — Assembly Bill (AB) 2253 by Assemblymember Tasha Boerner (D-Encinitas) passed 42-20 from the Assembly Floor and is headed to the Governor’s Desk. If signed, AB 2253, known as the Protecting Consumers Against Greenwashing Act, would protect consumers from deceptive recycled content claims by requiring companies that advertise recycled content in their products to be honest about the amount of recycled material used. The bill is sponsored by Californians Against Waste.

“Californians deserve to know exactly what we are buying so we can make informed decisions. When companies misrepresent their products or deceptively market their recycling efforts, consumers cannot trust sustainability claims. AB 2253 ensures consumers can support real sustainability if they choose to, and helps restore trust to product labels,” stated Assemblymember Boerner.

"Californians should be able to trust that when a product says it’s made with recycled content, it actually is. AB 2253 is about making sure companies are backing up those claims with real recycled material, rather than relying on accounting schemes that don’t reflect what’s actually in the product," said Kayla Robinson, Legislative Director at Californians Against Waste, the sponsor of AB 2253. "This is an important step toward giving consumers more confidence in the products they buy and supporting the companies that are truly investing in recycled materials.”
